During the meeting, lab tours to the Center for High-Power Radiation Sources/ELBE accelerator at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf and to the OncoRay facility will be organized.
Please indicate, in which of the tours you would like to participate – of course you can go on two or all three of them, if you wish.
Low-background laboratory Felsenkeller (Monday, 4 March, 17:30-19:00h)
Since 1982, there is a low-background laboratory on the site of former Felsenkeller brewery. It is being run by VKTA – Nuclear Engineering and Analytics Inc. and is situated in a historic tunnel, well shielded from cosmic rays by a 45m rock layer.
Low-background gamma spectrometry is being conducted by means of several high purity germanium detectors. Currently, Felsenkeller low-background laboratory is the best-shielded underground lab in Germany. An additional laboratory, to be equipped with a 5 MV accelerator, is being planned and will be run jointly by TU Dresden and Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. It will be situated in a neighboring tunnel.
No transfer to the Felsenkeller lab will be provided, so please use the public transport:
We will meet on Monday, 4 March, at 17:25h at Fritz-Förster-Platz/Technische Universität bus stop, direction eastwards (direction: Löbtau).
We will then take the number 61 bus (final destination: Löbtau), departure at 17:33h. At Chemnitzer Straße bus stop, change for the line A bus (run by Freital local town transport, final destination: Freital, Pfaffengrund). Arrival will be at 17:48h at Felsenkeller bus stop. A person, familiar with the place, will use these buses as well and guide the visitors to Felsenkeller lab (a 5min walk from Felsenkeller bus stop). For the return trip, the same bus link will be used, arrival will be at 19:15h again at Fritz-Förster-Platz/Technische Universität bus stop.

If you intend to come by car, please go to “Am Eiswurmlager 1, 01189 Dresden”. The meeting point will be at 17:50h at the railway crossing gate at the site entrance, here is a map.
An additional registration with photo ID, as required for the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf tour, is not necessary for the Felsenkeller tour.
OncoRay (Tuesday, 5 March, 17:30-19:00h):
Proton therapy facility under construction, for both therapy and research, at which also a beamline for laser-driven proton acceleration will be available.
What can be seen:
- cyclotron (70-230 MeV), of which the main components will already be installed. Also, the realization of the beam path from the laser compartment on the roof down to the experimental cavern will be shown.
- irradiation facility for therapy, together with a large experimental cavern, where nuclear physics experiments can be conducted.
- one out of several electron linacs with irradiation facility and computer tomograph for therapy with electrons an photons. Electron energies are 6-21 MeV, delivered in steps of 3 MeV.
Photon radiation is available at these facilities at energies of 6 and 15 MV.
Participation is limited to 40 persons.

Center for High-Power Radiation Sources/ELBE accelerator at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (Wednesday, 6.3.2013, 17:30-19:00h):
The Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf operates the superconducting electron accelerator with high brilliance and low emittance (ELBE), free-electron lasers for the medium and far infrared, as well as the high-intensity laser DRACO. In addition, the facility provides quasi-monochromatic X-rays, bremsstrahlung, pulsed neutrons and pulsed, monochromatic positrons. For high-field infrared spectroscopy experiments, the infrared beam can also be transferred to the Dresden High Magnetic Field Laboratory, which is situated nearby.
By extending the ELBE radiation source, actually a Center for High-Power Radiation Sources is being formed. A high-power laser system in the petawatt range, a narrow band and a broad band terahertz source and experiments on coupling of a high-power laser to the ELBE electron beam are being set up.
What can be seen:
(depending on access during the actual beam operation)
- experimental caves, probably cave 111b with THz, positron and neutron sources (the latter is still under construction)
- experimental facility at the DRACO high-intensity laser.
Participation is limited to 40 persons.

Two minibuses will be provided by HZDR for transfer from the TU Dresden lecture-hall center, and back there after the tour.
The meeting point on Wednesday, 6 March, is at 17:25h at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) outreach stand in the TU Dresden lecture-hall center (foyer on the ground floor, close to the conference office – see here).
For this tour, a separate registration (in addition to the one on the web site) is required: Prior to departure on the bus, please provide name, given name, date of birth and the number of an official photo ID to the conference office. Accepted photo IDs, which you are required to carry with you on the tour, are: passport, national identity card (also issued by countries other than Germany), driver’s license.
Public transport fare information for the Felsenkeller and OncoRay lab tours
For every single trip, one “single ticket” of “fare stage 1, tariff zone Dresden”, at a price of 2.00 € each, is needed. There is also a 4-trip card at a price of 7.50 €, where you have to cancel one stub per trip and passenger. Changing vehicle is permitted within the 1h validity of the ticket/stub.
