Lise-Meitner-Lecture

Thursday, March 7, 18:00
Room: HSZ 03

Prof. Dr. Jocelyn Bell Burnell

Abstract:

PULSARS AND EXTREME PHYSICS

Pulsars were discovered some 40 years ago. What do we know about them now and what have they taught us about the extremes of physics? With an average density comparable to that of the nucleus, magnetic fields of around 100 000 000 T and speeds close to c, they have stretched our understanding of the behavior of matter. They serve as extremely accurate clocks with which to carry out precision experiments in relativity. Pulsar research continues to deliver exciting, startling and almost unbelievable results.

Lecture will be in English.

Role models-Exhibition: "Lise Meitners Töchter"

From Monday, March 3, to Thursday, March 7, there will be an exhibition of 18 posters presenting biographies of "role models" female physicists. It is titled "Lise Meitners Töchter - Physikerinnen stellen sich vor" and aims to encourage women to choose a profession within the field of natural sciences. The exhibition is located in the Main Building's foyer (Foyer Hörsaalzentrum). It is open to the general public from Monday March 3, 8:00 to Thursday March 7, 22:00 and is free of charge.
